If you know me at all...or even just follow me on Instagram ;) you know I LOVE GYROS. They are my favorite food. You also probably know that my husband is a major hunter and got me into it as well. So what do you do when you have a freeze stocked with venison? Make venison meatballs for gyros of course!
You're going to LOVE this recipe.
Venison Meatball Gyros
Ingredients
4 naan flatbreads (I love Stonefire brand)
1 tomato, chopped
1/2 cucumber, chopped
1/2 cup feta cheese
1/2 red onion, chopped
MEATBALLS (adapted from www.recipetineats.com)
1 red onion, grated
1 lb. ground venison (or beef)
1-2 Tbsp. garlic, minces
3/4 cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
2-3 Tbsp. parsley, chopped
1/2 tsp. oregano (dried)
1 Tbsp. olive oil
1/2 tsp. salt
Pepper, to taste
TZATZIKI SAUCE
1 cup plain greek yogurt
1/4 cup cucumber, chopped - small
1/2 tsp dill weed (dried)
2 tsp. lemon juice
1 tsp garlic salt
Directions
Preheat oven to 350F.
Chop the onion and add to a large bowl, add in the rest of the meatball ingredients. Mix well until the mixture is well combined.
Measure out heaped tablespoons and place onto a baking sheet.
Bake for 20 minutes or until browned.
While meatballs are baking, make tzatziki sauce by placing all the tzatziki sauce ingredients into a bowl and mixing together until well combined.
When meat balls are done, take them out to start cooling.
Spread tzatziki sauce onto a piece of naan flatbread, add meatballs, top with chopped tomato, cucumber, onion and feta.
Enjoy!
